Greek-owned company AETHORAX DEFENSE is set to challenge established players with the introduction of the AETHORAX AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) —a fully operational autonomous underwater system designed and manufactured entirely in Greece.
The program represents a significant technological achievement, reaching Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7) after a successful demonstration during the Greek Armed Forces’ “Doureios Ippos” exercise, where the vehicle proved its capabilities in demanding real-world maritime conditions.
Given Greece’s strategic geographic position, securing the maritime domain is of vital national importance. The development of systems such as the AETHORAX AUV provides a major strategic advantage, especially as the platform is based on 100% Greek intellectual property (Hellenic IP). Its entire architecture — including design, firmware and artificial intelligence (AI) stack — belongs to AETHORAX DEFENSE.

This level of technological ownership eliminates potential export-control bottlenecks and enables rapid adaptation to the specific requirements of end users, including the Armed Forces. The company has also strengthened its supply chain resilience by securing at least two alternative manufacturers, based in the United States and Europe, for every critical component.
A Compact Platform with Advanced Capabilities
The AETHORAX AUV is a compact, multi-mission underwater vehicle designed for a wide range of applications, including mine detection, protection of critical infrastructure, maritime passage security, seabed surveillance for hostile submarine detection, and specialised high-risk missions.
Its greatest advantage lies in its onboard intelligence. The vehicle operates with full autonomy, making decisions and carrying out missions without requiring continuous communication with a remote operator. It can navigate and track targets even in environments where GNSS signals are unavailable and communications are degraded.
Navigation and situational awareness are achieved through an advanced sensor suite combining a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), 6-DOF IMU with dual compass, depth sensor, imaging sonar, and a 1080p camera operating at 30 frames per second.

Dual-Use Technology for Defence and Society
AETHORAX DEFENSE’s vision centres on a dual-use platform capable of serving both military and civilian needs.
For defence and security, the vehicle provides a persistent underwater surveillance capability, supporting mine countermeasures (MCM), intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and port security operations.
Beyond the battlefield, the same technological foundation can support commercial and scientific applications, including underwater infrastructure inspection, search and rescue operations, and marine research.
