20-Month-Old Girl Dies in Aigina After Choking on Sweet Bread

A 20-month-old girl died Tuesday after choking on sweet bread at her family's home in Aegina

The community of Aegina is in mourning following the sudden death of a 20-month-old girl. The child passed away on Tuesday afternoon after choking on a piece of tsoureki, a traditional Greek sweet bread, while at home with her family. The tragedy unfolded in a matter of minutes, as her parents and medical staff raced desperately to save her life, ultimately without success.

According to reports, the girl suddenly began struggling to breathe while eating, as a piece of food appears to have blocked her airway.

Her parents rushed her immediately to the Aegina Health Center, where medical staff mobilized at once. Doctors and nurses made repeated resuscitation attempts, and a private physician was also called in to assist. For a brief period there were signs of improvement, raising hopes that the child might pull through, but her condition deteriorated sharply again shortly after.

Emergency transport to Piraeus was quickly arranged. The 20-month-old girl was carried by a Coast Guard vessel, while an ambulance and police units were already waiting at the port to ensure the fastest possible transfer to a hospital.

Despite the massive response and the coordinated efforts of everyone involved, the girl did not survive. She was taken to Tzaneio Hospital in Piraeus, where doctors confirmed her death, leaving her family and the entire Aegina community devastated.
