Μake us preferred on Google Travelers can mark World Lighthouse Day with a day trip from Athens to Lake Vouliagmeni and the Heraion of Perachora, including a visit to the Melagavi Lighthouse and the archaeological remains of an early Corinthian settlement.
The trip is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 17, with departure from Larissis Station at 9 a.m. Participants are asked to meet at the station at 8:50 a.m.
The first stop is Lake Vouliagmeni, a lagoon characterized by a sandy beach and a narrow channel connecting its waters with the Corinthian Gulf. Its waters are described as saltier than those of the sea and are renewed every six hours through the movement of the tide.
The lagoon stretches up to 2 kilometers in length and about 1 kilometer in width, with fine white sand along its western banks. Visitors will have time to swim and enjoy food and coffee before continuing to the afternoon portion of the excursion.
The group will then travel to the Heraion of Perachora and Melagavi Lighthouse, a site associated with the thermal and natural mineral waters of the area and one of the larger lighthouses on the Corinthian Gulf.
The archaeological site contains remains linked to the early Corinthian civilization of historical times. At its center was a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera, located at the bottom of the harbor near the rocks on which the current lighthouse stands.
Visitors will explore the archaeological site, including the Sanctuary of Hera beneath the Melagavi Lighthouse, as well as an L-shaped arcade, a large water tank, food halls and a second, smaller temple.
The excursion will also include a guided experience at the lighthouse before the group departs for Athens in the late afternoon.
