The figures also point to growing public awareness of organ donation, according to the Health Ministry, which has launched an information campaign encouraging citizens to register as donors.
The campaign sent informational messages about organ and tissue donation to citizens using the country’s intangible electronic prescription service.
51 patients receive transplants in two weeks
Organ donation was again highlighted over a two-week period during which 51 patients received transplants from 12 deceased donors at hospitals across Greece.
The procedures included liver transplants at Laiko General Hospital in Athens and the Hippokration Hospital in Thessaloniki, as well as kidney transplants at Laiko, Hippokration, Evangelismos Hospital in Athens and the University General Hospital of Patras.
The procedures also included a combined liver-kidney transplant at Laiko and a combined kidney-pancreas transplant at Hippokration.
The figures underscore the role of deceased and living donors in meeting the need for organ transplants, while the registration campaign seeks to broaden public participation in donation.
