The Hellenic Transplant Organization (EOM) has launched a large-scale campaign to encourage organ or tissue donation across Greece, sending more than 1.5 million emails to citizens via the government’s digital platform, gov.gr.

The initiative targets individuals who have activated the electronic prescription option, with the goal of gradually reaching the entire population. Recipients are informed about their rights and can consent to organ donation online.

EOM officials clarify that the campaign’s aim is not to pressure citizens but to inform and empower them to make a conscious choice.

Although Greece lags behind the EU average in organ donation rates, recent progress has been encouraging. EOM data show that in 2025, 111 donors helped save 240 patients, with transplant numbers tripling since 2018.

The number of donors per one million of the population has also risen from 3.5 in 2015 to 10.5 in 2025 reflecting growing public trust, improved cooperation between hospitals, doctors, and EOM, and increased awareness.

Currently, 35,000 Greeks are registered organ donors.

With the continued support of the Health Ministry and the use of digital governance tools, Greece aims to transform goodwill into active participation reminding citizens that one donor can save or change up to eight lives.
