Greek traffic police conducted an extensive series of roadside checks across Attica targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol, carrying out 38,098 breathalyzer tests from last Monday through the early hours of Monday, September 14.
The checks resulted in 205 alcohol-related violations, while five drivers were arrested after recording alcohol levels above 0.60 milligrams per liter of exhaled air.
Only 0.54% of all alcohol tests produced positive results, a figure traffic police officers said indicates a high level of compliance among drivers and a change in driving behavior.
Thousands of other violations recorded
During the same operation, police recorded 7,669 additional traffic violations, mainly involving speeding, dangerous maneuvers, failure to wear a protective helmet, cellphone use while driving, running traffic signals and driving without a valid license.
Authorities immobilized 936 vehicles, 130 of which had to be removed by tow truck.
Police also confiscated 983 driver’s licenses and 302 vehicle registration documents.
Ten drivers were found behind the wheel despite having previously had their licenses revoked because of earlier violations.
24 drivers arrested
A total of 24 drivers were arrested during the checks.
Traffic police said the inspections, particularly those targeting drunk driving, will continue at the same intensity.
