A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the region of Arcadia in southern Greece shortly before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, with tremors felt across a wide area, including the capital, Athens.
According to the National Observatory of Athens and the revised solution issued by the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake occurred at 00:57 local time. The epicenter was located 7 kilometers north-northeast of the village of Nestani, approximately 22 kilometers from the city of Tripoli, at a focal depth of 51.5 kilometers.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a focal depth of 29 kilometers.
The quake was strongly felt in parts of the Attica region, as well as in several cities and towns across the Peloponnese and central Greece, including Argos, Nafplio, Corinth, Loutraki, Aigio and areas of Athens.
Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos provided an early assessment, describing the tremor as shallow and estimating its magnitude at 4.6. In a public statement, he noted that, for the time being, he does not see any particular cause for concern.
