All 313 people detained by police after violent clashes near Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece’s largest university, were released without charges, authorities confirmed on Friday.

The detentions followed serious overnight incidents in central Thessaloniki, close to the university campus, where unrest broke out in the early hours. According to the Greek Police, none of those questioned were found to have committed a criminal offense, and no case files were opened against them.

What Happened

The clashes occurred near one of the city’s main intersections, adjacent to university facilities. In an official statement, the Thessaloniki Police Directorate said that groups of individuals with their faces covered emerged from within university grounds and launched sudden attacks on police forces.

Police reported that the attacks involved the use of homemade incendiary and explosive devices, including Molotov cocktails. The violence resulted in the injury of one police officer, who was taken to a military hospital for treatment, as well as damage to three police vehicles.

Police Operation and Detentions

In response, police said they used what they described as necessary and proportionate measures to restore order and prevent further escalation. Judicial authorities and university officials were informed due to the proximity of the incidents to the campus.

A large-scale police operation followed, during which 313 individuals were taken in for questioning and transferred to police headquarters. The review process lasted several hours as authorities examined whether they were involved in the clashes.

No Charges Filed

After evaluating the available evidence, police concluded that no actionable findings linked the detained individuals to criminal acts. As a result, all were released, and no arrests were made.
