Authorities in Thessaloniki have announced extensive traffic restrictions in the city center ahead of the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair and its accompanying speeches, events, demonstrations and marches.

The Thessaloniki Traffic Directorate said parking restrictions will begin Thursday and Friday, followed by broader vehicle restrictions on Saturday as events take place.

Parking restrictions begin Thursday

From 3 p.m. Thursday, September 3, through 8 p.m. Sunday, September 6, stopping and parking will be prohibited on:

  • Leoforou Stratou, from Kaftantzoglou to YMCA Square
  • 3rd September Street, from M. Alexandrou to Agiou Dimitriou

From 6 a.m. Friday, September 4, through 8 p.m. Sunday, September 6, the parking ban will also apply to:

  • Angelaki Street, along its entire length
  • Ethnikis Aminis, from Agiou Dimitriou to White Tower Square
  • Agiou Dimitriou
  • Grigoriou Lampraki, from Egnatia to 3rd September
  • Armenopoulou, from Melenikou to Ethnikis Aminis
  • Nik. Germanou, from White Tower Square to YMCA Square
  • Leonida Iasonidou, from Egnatia to Agiou Dimitriou
  • P. Mela, along its entire length
  • Kaftantzoglou, on the downhill side
  • Olympiados, from Elenis Zografou to Kassandrou
  • Vizyinou, from Panepistimiou

A separate parking ban will be in effect on Stilponos Kiriakidi Street from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 5, between Katsimidi and 3rd September streets.

Authorities also reminded drivers that parking and stopping are already prohibited on Tsimiski, Egnatia, Agias Sofias, Monastiriou, Palaiou Stathmou and Politechniou streets, as well as on Nikis Avenue and M. Alexandrou Avenue.

Major road closures planned for Saturday

From 3 p.m. Saturday, September 5, vehicle traffic will be progressively restricted on a much larger number of central roads, depending on how the scheduled events develop. The restrictions will remain in place until the events finish.

The affected roads are:

  • Leof. Stratou, from Alexandrou Papanastasiou to YMCA Square
  • 3rd September Street, from M. Alexandrou to Agiou Dimitriou
  • Vasilissis Olgas, from M. Mpotsari to Agias Triados
  • Vasilieos Georgiou, from Agias Triados to M. Andronikou
  • Nikis Avenue along its entire length
  • Kountouriotou, along its entire length
  • Konstantinou Karamanli, from M. Mpotsari to 3rd September
  • Egnatia, from Lagkada to 3rd September
  • Ethnikis Aminis, from Agiou Dimitriou to White Tower Square
  • Tsimiski, along its entire length
  • Agiou Dimitriou, from Lagkada to Stefanoi Dragoumi
  • Agias Sofias, from Egnatia to Agias Sofias Square, including the area around the square
  • P. Mela, along its entire length
  • Venizelou, along its entire length
  • M. Andronikou, along its entire length

Traffic routes during Saturday restrictions

From 3 p.m. Saturday until the relevant events end, traffic will be redirected progressively between the eastern and western parts of the city.

Drivers traveling from east to west will be directed through Katsimidi, the ring road, Agiou Dimitriou where conditions allow, and Olympiados.

Traffic traveling from west to east will be directed through 26th Oktovriou, Lagkada and the ring road, as well as Agiou Dimitriou where conditions permit.

The Thessaloniki Traffic Directorate said it will deploy increased traffic-control measures, using its full available force. Traffic officers will be stationed at key intersections to regulate vehicle movement.

Authorities are urging drivers to remove their vehicles from all roads covered by the announced parking restrictions before the measures take effect.
