Athens municipal authorities have unveiled a new digital platform aimed at reducing traffic congestion caused by the unregulated parking of tourist coaches in the Greek capital’s historic center, as the city grapples with another record tourism season.
The application, called Athens Bus Parking, was developed by a municipal technology company and is designed to improve the management of tourist bus traffic by allowing operators to locate, reserve and schedule available parking spaces more efficiently. According to the municipality, the platform is intended to streamline vehicle movements and reduce bottlenecks at some of the city’s most heavily visited landmarks.
The initiative was presented during a meeting between municipal officials and representatives of the tourism transport sector.
Officials said their immediate priorities include mapping and optimizing existing tourist bus parking facilities and developing a broader management framework aimed at supporting sustainable urban mobility while improving the day-to-day functioning of the capital.
The launch comes as Athens faces mounting pressure from rising visitor numbers, with tourism-related traffic increasingly cited as a contributor to congestion around major attractions and transport corridors. Over the past month, public debate in the capital has focused on the broader challenge of balancing growing tourism demand with quality-of-life concerns for residents, including traffic management, public space use and mobility planning. The municipality has increasingly turned to digital tools to address these challenges, building on previous smart-city initiatives aimed at parking management and urban services areas.
