The Athens Traffic Ring, known in Greek as “Daktylios”, a vehicle restriction system designed to reduce congestion and pollution in the Greek capital’s city center, is in effect during a specific period each year. According to official information published on gov.gr, the current enforcement period will remain in force until July 24.

The restrictions apply on weekdays, with different operating hours from Monday through Thursday and a shorter schedule on Fridays.

The current enforcement period began on October 20, 2025. Once the period expires, the restrictions will be suspended unless a new ministerial decision is issued establishing a different framework.

Nevertheless, certain types of vehicles are permitted unrestricted access to the city center through a special circulation permit.

When the Athens Traffic Ring Applies

The measure is not enforced around the clock. According to official guidance, the Traffic Ring operates during the following days and hours:

Monday to Thursday: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: Not in effect

Which Vehicles Are Exempt

According to gov.gr, special permits are issued for vehicles that fall into specific categories and are entitled to unrestricted circulation within the Traffic Ring zone.

Vehicles eligible for free entry include:

  • Electric vehicles
  • Factory-built natural gas or LPG-powered vehicles
  • Hybrid vehicles
  • Euro 6 vehicles, provided they meet specific CO2 emissions limits

Owners of Euro 6 vehicles should pay particular attention, as meeting the Euro 6 emissions standard alone is not sufficient. These vehicles must also remain below designated CO2 emissions thresholds, which vary depending on the vehicle’s date of registration.
