Athens on Cold Alert as Temperatures Plunge

The municipality’s Street Work teams will operate around the clock across the city, distributing hot drinks, food, clothing and blankets.

The Municipality of Athens has been placed on heightened alert as sharply lower temperatures are expected to hit the capital in the coming hours. From today, Sunday, 11 January, at 8:00 p.m. and until further notice, emergency measures are being rolled out to protect the city’s most vulnerable residents.

As part of the response, the Agios Eleftherios Friendship Club (372 Acharnon Street, tel. 210 2012334) will open as a heated shelter, offering safe accommodation, meals and basic care services.

At the same time, the municipality’s Street Work teams will operate around the clock across the city, distributing hot drinks, food, clothing and blankets. They will also provide information and assistance to those who need to be transferred to the Dormitory of the Athens Homeless Multi-Purpose Center, where essential needs such as overnight shelter and meals can be met.

How to get in touch
A 24-hour hotline will be available at 210 5246515/6 (extension 0). Citizens may also submit requests or information related to the needs of the homeless population via email at: kyadastreetwork@athens.gr

Reports of locations where homeless individuals are staying can additionally be made through the Municipality of Athens’ four-digit service line, 1595 (charges apply depending on the provider).
