Athens prosecutors have launched two separate interventions concerning building safety issues in the capital, including cracks reportedly linked to Metro construction works and the aftermath of a building collapse in the Petralona district.
The head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office, Aristidis Koreas, ordered an urgent preliminary investigation into reports of cracks appearing in buildings in Kypseli following ongoing Metro works.
The investigation will examine whether any criminal offences have been committed and whether the construction activity poses a risk to public safety.
Meanwhile, authorities also focused on the collapsed apartment building in Petralona, where a new meeting was held to coordinate the removal of debris from the site.
The meeting was attended by Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias and the head of the Athens Prosecutor’s Office. Following the discussions, prosecutors ordered the relevant municipal services to begin removing the debris, with assistance from the Attica Region if needed.
The removal process is expected to allow expert investigators appointed by prosecutors to proceed with their work and determine the causes behind the building collapse.
