The Bank of Greece (BoG) has warned customers of fraudulent videos circulating online, which depict Governor Yannis Stournaras in talks with reporters who urge users to sign up for a small charge to a platform with the promise of large returns.
The Bank of Greece stresses the videos showing the chief of BoG are adulterated, likely AI-generated, warning of the misuse of the Bank’s logo and the names of members of its management and staff.
In its announcement, the Bank states that its name, logos and other identifying features have been abusively used by third parties in connection with fictitious financial transactions and other fraudulent activities. In some cases, the Bank of Greece is even presented as the institution through which payments or transactions will be carried out.
The Bank clarifies that it does not provide commercial banking services to individuals or businesses. In particular, it does not collect fees for cross-border transfers of funds, does not accept deposits from such persons or entities, and does not issue certificates for the release of funds.
The bank urges the public to avoid any contact with individuals engaged in such activities.
The Bank of Greece (BoG) also stresses that it bears no responsibility in cases where its name, logos or address are used for fraudulent purposes. Citizens who become aware of suspicious documents or emails referring to or purporting to originate from the Bank are advised to immediately inform or consult the competent authorities.
