Greek authorities launched an emergency response on Friday after receiving a bomb threat concerning the passenger ferry Blue Star 2, prompting the vessel to alter course and head to the port of Lavrio for inspection.
The ferry had departed from Piraeus on a scheduled route serving the islands of Syros, Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos and Rhodes.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Blue Star 2 ferry was diverted from its planned course so that bomb disposal specialists could carry out a thorough search. A specially trained explosives-detection dog will also be deployed as part of the inspection.
The Blue Star 2 was carrying 952 passengers and 98 crew members at the time of the alert, authorities said.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Fire Service and the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB), were being dispatched to Lavrio as a precaution while the investigation into the threat continued.
No further details were immediately available.
