Deputy Fire Service spokesman Giannis Artopoios shared the first details on the deadly explosion and fire at a vinegar production and packaging factory in Examilia, Corinth, speaking to ERT.

According to Artopoios, the Fire Service’s Operations Center was notified of the incident at 1:30 p.m., and 35 firefighters with 11 water tankers and one forest commando unit were dispatched to the scene immediately.

What Caused The Explosion

Based on initial information, the fire broke out after an explosion, reportedly caused by the formation of an explosive mixture during welding work at the factory.

Given the explosive nature of the materials stored at the facility, a powerful blast followed, and a fire broke out soon after.

The explosion was felt from a considerable distance, at least as far as Kiato, around 24 km west of Corinth, while thick black smoke covered the area. The business was almost completely destroyed.

One Dead, One Injured

The shockwave and explosion killed a worker of Albanian origin who, according to reports, was an electric welder.

A woman was also injured on her hands and was taken to Corinth Hospital.

Artopoios stressed that following fire safety rules in spaces containing flammable materials is essential for worker safety.

He said fire safety compliance is fundamental to protecting staff in this kind of factory setting, and that when it isn’t followed to the letter, the consequences can be severe, as happened that day. He pointed to the need to build a strong safety culture in similar businesses.
