The vision of Europe’s largest urban redevelopment is becoming reality, opening a new chapter for residents of the wider Elliniko area.

The Ellinikon is moving ahead with the gradual handover of The Ellinikon Sports Park to the public, offering a modern hub for sport, green space and wellness that promises to change how people spend their free time.

The Ellinikon Sports Park opened its gates on July 20 and is being handed over to the community in stages. From this first phase of operation, residents of the surrounding municipalities and the southern suburbs, along with visitors from across Attica, gain access to the first available facilities.

With free access and a design built for everyone from professional athletes and sports clubs to families, children and amateurs of all ages, the project reconnects the urban fabric with nature and sport.

Where Elliniko’s Heart Beats

The Ellinikon Sports Park covers an area of 287,000 square meters, forming an integral part of the larger Elliniko Park. Its design philosophy rests on a balance between top-level infrastructure and the natural environment, with more than 115,000 square meters dedicated exclusively to open, green spaces.

The first-phase facilities include:

• Athletics: An open track and field area with a 1,070-seat stand. The infrastructure holds World Athletics’ top Type 1 certification, opening the door to hosting major international competitions.
• Football Pitches: Four state-of-the-art 11-a-side pitches, two with artificial turf and two with hybrid turf, all certified to FIFA’s top Quality Pro standard.
• New Olympic Pool: A construction highlight featuring innovative moveable-floor technology that allows the pool to be split into two independent zones, doubling the number of available swimming lanes from 10 to 20.
• Racquet Sports and Basketball: Two modern basketball courts and two tennis courts, designed for both casual play and serious training.
• Athlete Accommodation: A dedicated sports lodging building with 124 rooms and around 250 beds, ready to host sports delegations and clubs.
• Open-Air Exercise: Open green spaces for exercise, or simply for running and walking amid nature.

Additional facilities are set to be added in early 2027, including two more 5-a-side football pitches.

A Living Destination Built For Everyone

The new park isn’t limited to training and exercise. It was designed as a complete multi-use space, offering shared green areas along with extensive walking and cycling paths for leisurely strolls.

Visitors will also find four dedicated dining areas, children’s recreation facilities and 1,350 parking spaces.

Technology plays a role too, through a dedicated digital app (Super App) that will let visitors quickly and easily book sports facilities and parking.

The Ellinikon Sports Park has already shown what it can do as a venue for major events. Just days ago, it hosted the super-special stage of the 2026 EKO Acropolis Rally, drawing more than 10,000 spectators to watch 57 crews from 24 countries, confirming the park’s potential to host competitions of global scale.

Looking ahead, venues such as the Sports Piazza (capacity 3,000 to 5,000) and the Spiral Venue (up to 10,000) are expected to become home to major cultural and entertainment festivals.

Commenting on this milestone, LAMDA Development CEO Odysseas Athanasiou stressed the deep symbolic importance of delivering the Sports Park’s first phase. He described it as the moment The Ellinikon effectively opens its arms to the public, giving people the chance to experience firsthand the first tangible signs of a new everyday life taking shape in the area. He added that for the company, this marks a major milestone in a long journey that began years ago with vision, persistence and full commitment to the goal.

The Plan For What’s Next

Development of the sports complex doesn’t stop here. The timeline for the project’s second phase runs through 2028 and includes an international-standard tennis club with 18 indoor and outdoor courts, ten padel courts, two pickleball courts and a specialized tennis academy.

New basketball facilities and four beach volleyball courts will also be added, along with a full wellness and recovery center offering spa, yoga and nutrition support services.

A Green Identity

Behind every modern facility lies a real commitment to sustainability. Bioclimatic design, the use of natural light and low-impact recyclable materials, many sourced from the site’s former airport runway, form the core of the construction approach.

In addition, solar panel systems will cover a significant share of energy needs, while a smart central control system (BMS) will optimize heating, cooling and lighting use to reduce consumption.

Opening Hours

From the July 20 opening through September, the park will welcome the public daily from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Starting in the fall, hours will extend from 8:00 a.m. to midnight, 362 days a year.

Admission is free for everyone, with access from the Alimos side via Aeroporias Street.
