A mystery surrounds the disappearance of 50-year-old You Ting from the coastal town of Artemida, east of Athens, as tomorrow will mark forty days since she walked out of her front door and was never seen again.
Her Greek husband was in China on business at the time. Speaking on the television program “Light in the Tunnel,” he said the couple were in daily phone contact and that on the day she vanished, You Ting had not planned to deviate from her usual routine. “Her usual schedule was to go down to the city center. She would take the 305 bus from the stop. She almost never drove,” he noted.
The Bus Driver’s Account
The driver of the bus that picked her up on the morning of May 20 spoke to the program Live News and confirmed he recognized her: “Yes, it was her, definitely. Because she always wore pretty much the same clothes. The white outfit I saw in the photo. Something like a uniform. That day she got on normally. It must have been around 11-something, I think. Around 11:30. And she got off, from what I saw, at Nomismatokopeio that day.”
According to those close to her, her destination was central Athens. In addition to her work as a translator, You Ting had taken on the management of rental apartments belonging to wealthy Chinese nationals in various neighborhoods of the capital. “The first thing that came to mind was whether a car had hit her, some reckless driver. Or that something happened on her way to collect rent. She had told me she was going into the city center to collect rent from homes of Chinese owners where mostly Pakistanis and others live. And I told her to be careful,” her mother-in-law said.
The bus driver added that You Ting usually boarded at a specific stop in Artemida early in the morning. That day, however, he spotted her around 11:30, after she had already visited the town hall to take care of some paperwork. “She usually got on at the 4th or 5th Ypapanti stop. Most often it was the 5th Ypapanti. But she was always very polite. She would sit down and validate her ticket,” the driver said.
“She stopped by the municipality. They had the municipal property tax document ready for the property. 11:10 our time,” her husband noted, adding that this was the last time they spoke.
The Delayed Missing Person Report
The couple have been married since 2002 and have lived permanently in Greece for the past 25 years. They acquired the home in Artemida in late 2025. Her husband, an engineer at a shipping company, travels frequently abroad, while You Ting managed the rental properties.
Although her trail went cold on May 20, the family was unable to check her home immediately. When her brother-in-law eventually visited the property, he found signs that she had been gone for weeks. “They went inside on June 10. The shutters were not down. Tea had gone moldy. The aquarium lights were on, which means she intended to come back,” her husband said.
The disappearance was reported with a delay, as he was at a remote port in China and was struggling to return to Greece. Ultimately, it was his brother who filed the missing person report.
The case has drawn significant attention from the Chinese consulate, while police have intensified their investigation. Authorities are concentrating their efforts on the areas where You Ting regularly moved about, working to map her route and identify the people she may have come into contact with.
