The months-long search for a 33-year-old doctor who disappeared in Crete last December appears to have reached a tragic conclusion after a body believed to be his was discovered on Thursday in the Apokoronas area of Chania.

The body was found by a passerby, who immediately alerted police. Officers from the local police department, members of the investigative team and a forensic expert were dispatched to the scene.

Authorities believe the remains belong to the missing doctor, Alexis Tsikopoulos, based on initial findings and similarities between the clothing found on the body and the clothing he was known to be wearing when he disappeared. However, official identification procedures have not yet been completed.

The body has been transferred to hospital facilities, where an autopsy will be carried out to determine the exact circumstances and cause of death. The victim’s parents are expected to arrive for formal identification. If visual identification proves impossible due to the advanced state of decomposition, DNA testing may be required.

Body Hidden by Dense Vegetation

According to local police officials, the remains were found outdoors in an area covered by thick shrubbery and dry branches near a small chapel. The challenging terrain and dense vegetation significantly hindered search efforts and may explain why the body remained undiscovered for approximately six months.

Speaking about the discovery, local police chief Kanellos Nikolaou said that a joint examination of the scene with a forensic specialist indicated a strong match with the missing doctor.

“During our investigation with the forensic examiner, we determined that the body belongs to the missing young doctor. We observed that characteristics of the clothing matched those associated with him,” Nikolaou said.

Questions Remain Unanswered

Residents of the area expressed surprise at the location where the body was eventually found. One local resident noted that despite extensive search operations over the past months, nobody had expected the missing doctor to have travelled such a considerable distance on foot from the place where his car had been left.

According to the resident, the doctor appears to have passed through the village unnoticed before reaching the secluded location where he was ultimately discovered.

Authorities are now awaiting the results of the autopsy, which are expected to provide crucial answers about how the 33-year-old died and bring greater clarity to a case that has remained unresolved since his disappearance late last year.
