Μake us preferred on Google Greek prosecutors have brought new murder charges against a couple arrested in connection with the discovery of a dead infant in a freezer at an apartment in Kypseli, central Athens.
The 43-year-old man and his 38-year-old partner are now facing prosecution for the intentional homicide of a family member acting jointly, in addition to charges they already faced involving drugs, weapons and false testimony.
The latest charges follow the transfer of the police case file to prosecutors as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
New homicide charges
The prosecutor filed a new criminal case against the couple for the intentional killing of the infant. They are also accused of jointly carrying a weapon, using a weapon, illegally possessing ammunition, and repeatedly giving false testimony.
The case file has been forwarded to an investigating magistrate, and arrest warrants are expected to be issued in connection with the homicide investigation.
The three defendants had already been referred to an investigating magistrate over the drug-related aspect of the case. The 43-year-old man, his 38-year-old partner and a 26-year-old Afghan man had initially faced felony charges related to drug trafficking, as well as a misdemeanor charge for failing to report the discovery of a dead person.
Infant found in freezer
The infant’s body was discovered inside a pink suitcase in a freezer at the Kypseli apartment. According to the findings cited in the investigation, the body had 18 stab wounds to the back.
Three of the wounds were inflicted before the infant’s death, while the remaining wounds were inflicted afterward, according to the forensic findings.
The exact time of death could not be established because the body had been kept frozen for an extended period.
Authorities are still trying to establish the child’s identity, including the time and place of birth, as well as determine where the killing took place. DNA testing and statements from those involved are expected to provide further information.
The 43-year-old man has denied killing the infant, saying in comments to Greek television that the child had been ill and had suffered from an intestinal condition and a hernia. He also claimed the infant had a fever on the day in question and had been taken to a doctor.
Separate charges involving 15-year-old girl
Prosecutors have also brought separate charges against the 26-year-old Afghan man, who was in a relationship with the couples daughter, the 15-year-old girl found at the apartment on Thasou Street.
He faces charges of sexual acts with a person under the age of 12 and after the person had reached the age of 12, according to the case file.
The case has also been sent to an investigating magistrate, with arrest warrants expected.
Previous reports involving the family
The investigation has also raised questions about the welfare of the couple’s children. According to the report, the organization The Smile of the Child had received three reports in 2020 concerning neglect and substance use by the parents.
The children were taken to a children’s hospital three times during 2025 over concerns about neglect.
The 43-year-old man is also described as having previously come to the attention of authorities. In 2020, he was accused of trafficking a German woman on Acharnon Street and served a prison sentence. He was released from Korydallos Prison in October of that year.
The couple moved frequently. Before moving into the Kypseli apartment, the family had lived in a fourth-floor apartment on Fylis Street that had also been rented through Airbnb.
They left that apartment about a month and a half ago following a fire that broke out inside the property.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the infant’s death and the events surrounding the family, with DNA results and further testimony expected to help clarify the case.
