Maria Karystianou has publicly expressed outrage over the ongoing investigation into the Tempi train tragedy, highlighting the disappearance of critical video evidence from the incident that claimed 57 lives and injured hundreds.
In a detailed statement, Karystianou described the court proceedings as “shameful for our country,” emphasizing that videos from the railway cameras, initially seized by judicial order, have mysteriously vanished. She questioned why footage confiscated by investigating magistrate Sotiris Bakaimis, appointed following a directive from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was never included in the official case file.
Karystianou also raised concerns about possible failures by law enforcement and judicial officials tasked with handling the evidence. She noted inconsistencies in the seizure process, including later requests for partial footage, and questioned why no accountability measures were taken against officials allegedly responsible for mishandling the videos.
“The videos that show the truth were confiscated on the very first day of the investigation and then disappeared,” she wrote, suggesting that the missing footage could reveal crucial details about the tragedy. She called on the Larissa court to summon the investigating magistrate as a witness to clarify the situation and ensure transparency.
