A 25-year-old man has been fatally stabbed in a park in Athens, prompting a major police investigation as authorities search for those responsible for the attack.
The victim was found with a fatal wound to the heart in a public park in the southern part of the city. Emergency services were alerted, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Witness describes violent altercation
According to a witness, the fatal attack was preceded by an argument inside the park. The victim was reportedly stabbed and managed to walk a short distance before collapsing.
“He was stabbed in the heart. There was blood, and he walked a few meters before falling,” the witness said.
Police quickly sealed off the area and launched a search for evidence, while officers continue to examine the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Investigation focuses on motives
Authorities have ruled out robbery as a motive, as the victim’s personal belongings, including his phone and money, were found intact.
Officials also stated there is currently no indication of a connection to sports-related violence. Investigators are examining possible prior contacts or meetings, including data from the victim’s phone, to determine whether he had arranged to meet someone.
Police have not confirmed reports of other individuals seen in the park earlier, noting that such information has not yet been verified.
Area described as unsafe
Local residents described the park as isolated and potentially dangerous, with reports of frequent disturbances in the area. Some suggested that incidents of violence had been a concern for some time.
Authorities, however, said the area is regularly patrolled, noting that officers were already nearby and arrived at the scene within minutes of being alerted.
Father’s emotional farewell
The victim’s father, a senior police officer, shared a deeply emotional message following his son’s death.
“Safe journey to eternity, my captain. Fair winds, my soul,” he wrote in a social media post, accompanying the message with a photograph of the two together.
The funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday morning, as family and friends prepare to say their final goodbye.
