Ferry Collision Splits Rafina Port Pier in Two

A passenger ferry crashed into Rafina Port’s northern pier, splitting the structure in two without causing injuries or pollution.

A passenger ferry collided with the northern pier at Rafina Port late on Monday, breaking the structure in two. Port authorities who rushed to the scene confirmed that no injuries were reported. Officials also said no fuel leak or marine pollution was detected following the incident.

The Andros King, carrying 283 passengers, 80 vehicles and 60 crew members, was returning to Rafina after completing its route to Mykonos, Tinos and Andros .

The Rafina Port Authority has launched a preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident.

Inspections carried out after the accident found no damage affecting the vessel’s seaworthiness. The Andros King departed from Rafina as scheduled on Tuesday morning after receiving clearance from the relevant authorities.

Rafina is the second-busiest passenger port in the wider Athens area after Piraeus, serving around two million passengers annually. During the summer peak season, the port handles between 20 and 30 ferry departures a day, most of them bound for the Cyclades islands. Rafina port is located on the eastern coast of Attica and is approximately 32km from central Athens and 15.7km from Athens International Airport.
