The moment two ferryboats collided at the extreme northwest mainland port of Igoumenitsa was widely disseminated on Greek-language social media on Sunday, especially due to a video posted by thespro.gr
The incident occurred a day earlier, according to the coast guard, when gale force winds caused two docking ropes on a ferryboat’s port to break, resulting in its collision with another docked ferryboat at the same port.
Following an inspection by a special coast guard unit, minor material damage was detected on both vessels. The Central Port Authority of Igoumenitsa, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, subsequently prohibited the two ships from sailing until relevant seaworthiness certificates are presented, in the wake of the collision.
