A wildfire is underway in the Kalamonas area of Rhodes, with firefighting forces and volunteers working to contain the flames in a difficult-to-access location.
The fire broke out shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday and is burning through reeds and grassland covering an area estimated at around 2 to 4 acres, according to statements by regional official Christos Efstratiou.
The deputy mayor of Rhodes responsible for Civil Protection, Michalis Thomatos, said the fire is burning inside a stream surrounded by dense reeds, making access significantly harder for ground crews.
“We are trying to contain it. It is inside the stream, among the reeds,” Thomatos said, highlighting the challenges created by the area’s terrain.
He stressed that everyone involved in the operation needs to remain extremely cautious due to the difficult conditions and limited access to the site.
Firefighting forces remain in the area, making efforts to bring the blaze under control before it spreads to nearby land. Volunteers are also assisting in the response operation.
