The Mixed Jury Court of the Aegean has unanimously upheld the conviction of Dimitris Vergos for the intentional homicide of 26-year-old Garifalia Psarrakou on Folegandros. The court rejected the defense’s arguments that the killing occurred in a moment of temporary emotional frenzy or that Vergos should receive reduced culpability.

The prosecution also dismissed requests for mitigating circumstances, including Vergos’ previous lawful conduct and good behavior during detention, noting that his actions before, during, and after the crime demonstrated clear, conscious, and calm intent.

The court confirmed the original verdict of intentional homicide with premeditation, leaving no room for any reduction in responsibility.

On July 17, 2021, Garifalia Psarrakou was found dead on a Folegandros beach. According to the indictment, Vergos struck her, dragged her across rocks, and threw her into the sea. He spent approximately 30 hours hiding in a cave before authorities captured him. Vergos claimed to police that the murder occurred in “a bad moment” and blamed incorrect directions given to him for the beach where the incident took place.
