A “parent’s worst nightmare” incident was reported from central Athens on Thursday evening when police said a 15-year-old pupil from France fell to his death from the third floor of a small hotel.
According to initial and still sketchy reports, the victim was on a school trip with fellow students.
An ambulance was immediately dispatched to the scene, where first responders provided emergency aid.
Nevertheless, the teen was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby children’s hospital.
While an accident currently appears the most likely scenario, officials have not ruled out self-harm. Police are collecting witness statements from the student’s classmates, who remain in shock following the incident.
Investigators are also reviewing security camera footage from the hotel and nearby areas.
Forensic examinations, including toxicology and histology tests, are expected to determine whether the student had consumed alcohol or other substances at the time of the fall.
The current mostly “off-season” in the Greek capital, ahead of Easter, is considered a prime time for schools in other parts of Europe to scheduled trips to Athens.
