Μake us preferred on Google A police investigation is underway in Athens after officers discovered the body of a dead, frozen infant inside a container in a suitcase at an apartment in the Kypseli neighborhood.
The grim discovery was made Sunday afternoon during a police search of a short-term rental apartment on Thasou Street.
According to information cited in the report, the apartment’s owner had contacted police after alleging that a family staying at the property had failed to pay rent and appeared to be using drugs.
While officers were on their way to the apartment, the owner encountered a patrol from the police motorcycle unit and informed them of the situation.
Police immediately entered the apartment and found six people inside: a 43-year-old Greek man, his 28-year-old German wife, their three minor children — a 15-year-old girl and two boys aged 12 and 9 — and a 26-year-old Afghan man, who said he was the 15-year-old girl’s partner.
According to information cited in the report, the 15-year-old is reportedly pregnant, with the 25-year-old believed to be the father of the child. The 28-year-old woman is also reportedly pregnant.
The father, the 15-year-old girl and the 26-year-old man were taken to the police station after officers found small quantities of drugs in their possession.
Infant found in suitcase
When officers returned to the apartment to conduct a further search, they found the German mother with her two younger sons preparing to leave. Their luggage had already been packed.
During a search of one of the suitcases, officers discovered a container holding the body of a dead and frozen infant.
The discovery shocked the officers at the scene.
When asked about the contents of the container, the German woman reportedly said the infant was her child and that she had lost the baby and kept the body in a freezer.
However, she gave conflicting accounts about when the death occurred. She initially said it had happened one to two years earlier, before later saying it had occurred eight months ago.
Investigation continues
All members of the family were taken to the Athens Security Subdivision, where they are being questioned and statements are being collected.
Police are also expected to take statements from neighbors as part of the investigation.
An autopsy and forensic examination of the infant are expected to determine when and how the baby died, as authorities continue working to clarify the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
