Greece Forecast Calls for Heat and Gale-Force Winds

Sunny summer weather will dominate Greece through Thursday, with temperatures reaching up to 39°C (102°F) inland and strong northerly Meltemi winds in the Aegean expected to intensify to 8 Beaufort from Wednesday

Sunny and typically summer-like weather is expected across most of Greece in the coming days, with high temperatures continuing and strong Meltemi—the seasonal northerly winds that affect the Aegean Sea—forecast to strengthen significantly from Wednesday.

According to the forecast, only limited cloud development is expected over mountainous inland areas during the warmest part of the day, where brief, light local showers are possible. Although temperatures will remain high, forecasters note that they are typical for late July in Greece.

Tuesday, July 28

Tuesday will be mostly sunny nationwide, with only a few temporary clouds developing over inland mountain regions during the afternoon, where isolated light showers may occur.

Winds will blow from the north at 2 to 4 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea and 5 to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean, gradually strengthening to 7 Beaufort in southeastern areas by evening.

Temperatures are expected to remain steady, reaching 35°C to 37°C (95°F to 99°F) across mainland Greece and locally 38°C (100°F). On the islands, highs will generally range from 32°C to 35°C (90°F to 95°F), while parts of Crete and the Dodecanese could see 36°C to 37°C (97°F to 99°F).

In Athens, sunny conditions will prevail throughout the day, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 36°C (75°F to 97°F). Northerly winds in eastern parts of the region will strengthen during the evening.

Thessaloniki will also enjoy mostly sunny weather, with a slight chance of brief showers over nearby mountains in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 23°C to 35°C (73°F to 95°F).

Wednesday, July 29

The weather will remain mostly sunny across the country, with only isolated afternoon cloud development over central and northern mountainous areas.

The main feature of the day will be the strengthening of the Meltemi winds in the Aegean, where northerly to northeasterly winds are expected to reach 7 to 8 Beaufort in some locations. Winds in the Ionian Sea will remain much lighter at 2 to 4 Beaufort.

Temperatures will fall slightly in eastern Greece but remain high elsewhere. Highs are forecast to reach 36°C to 38°C (97°F to 100°F) across mainland areas, locally 39°C (102°F) in western Greece, 35°C to 37°C (95°F to 99°F) in the Ionian, eastern Aegean, and southern Crete, and 30°C to 32°C (86°F to 90°F) across the rest of the islands.

Thursday, July 30

Thursday’s weather is expected to remain stable, with sunshine dominating across Greece and only a few temporary afternoon clouds over mountainous inland areas and the mountains of Crete.

The Meltemi winds will become even stronger, with northerly to northeasterly winds reaching 5 to 7 Beaufort across the Aegean and locally 8 Beaufort. Winds over the Ionian Sea will remain lighter at 2 to 5 Beaufort.

Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged from Wednesday.
