Thousands of vehicle owners in Greece will be able to return their cars and motorcycles to the road from April 1 by paying road tax on a monthly basis, as the tax authority opens its digital platform, myCar.

The system allows drivers to lift a vehicle’s inactive status and pay only for the period they intend to use it until the end of the year. This means no additional charges, offering flexibility especially during peak travel periods such as the Easter holidays.

More than 120,000 owners who had previously withdrawn their license plates—many since December 2025—are expected to benefit from the measure.

How the system works

Under the new framework, road tax is calculated proportionally. Drivers pay one-twelfth of the annual fee for each month of use. For example, a vehicle with an annual tax of €300 would cost €100 for four months of use, while a €500 annual fee would amount to €125 for three months.

Steps to reactivate a vehicle

To lift a vehicle’s inactive status, owners must log in to the myCar platform using their tax credentials, select the registered inactive vehicle, and pay the corresponding road tax for the desired period.

Before approval, the system performs an online check to confirm the vehicle is insured. Once verified, the request can be submitted. In cases where license plates were physically deposited with tax offices, owners must apply to retrieve them.

For jointly owned vehicles, all co-owners must approve the request electronically.

Key restriction

Authorities note that vehicle inactivity can only be lifted once per year. After the selected usage period expires, owners must declare the vehicle inactive again or face significant fines.
