As the deadline approaches, time is running out for vehicle owners in Greece to pay their 2026 vehicle circulation tax, a mandatory annual fee tied to car ownership. With the busy holiday season underway, officials are warning that delays could prove costly for those who forget to settle their dues on time.

According to the rules, late payment results in escalating financial penalties, depending on how long the delay lasts:

  • 25% surcharge if payment is made by January 31, 2026
  • 50% surcharge if paid by February 28, 2026
  • 100% surcharge (double the original amount) for payments made from March 1, 2026 onward

The 2026 vehicle tax notices are already available through myCAR, the online platform of Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue. Authorities stress that penalties are applied automatically once the deadline passes.

To make the process easier, officials note that this year the tax can be paid without logging in using personal tax-system credentials. Vehicle owners can access their payment notice by entering only the vehicle’s registration number, the owner’s tax identification number, and the relevant tax year.

The payment process includes the following steps:

  • Visit the official tax authority website
  • Navigate to digital services and select the vehicle tax option
  • Enter the required vehicle and taxpayer details
  • Download the payment notice and complete the transaction
