Greece’s espionage investigation, which has triggered alarm within the country’s armed forces, is expanding as authorities probe a possible wider network beyond the 54-year-old Hellenic Air Force officer accused of leaking highly classified military information to China.
The officer remains in military custody and is due to testify before the Air Force court on Tuesday, while investigators continue inquiries on multiple fronts.
According to officials familiar with the case, the suspect has recently provided information about his own activities as well as about the individual believed to have acted as his handler in Beijing.
Combined with digital and financial evidence already gathered, his testimony has prompted authorities to broaden the investigation, leaving open the possibility that additional individuals—either active-duty or retired personnel—may be implicated.
The accused officer reportedly described his contact as a man in his early forties, permanently based in Beijing. Their first contact is believed to have occurred in 2024 during a private trip the officer took to China. The journey was presented as participation in seminars but was reportedly undertaken without notifying his service, as required.
Roughly a year later, investigators believe the two men met again in Athens, where they discussed the continuation of their cooperation. During that meeting, the officer allegedly received communication devices intended exclusively for exchanging sensitive information. These devices were later found in his possession at the time of his arrest, a discovery considered crucial to the case.
Investigators say communications were conducted through encrypted digital platforms, with strict security precautions in place. The officer is believed to have photographed classified service documents and transmitted them abroad using only the equipment provided to him.
Authorities are now assessing both the volume and the sensitivity of the material leaked in order to determine the extent of potential damage to national interests.
Investigators believe the alleged espionage activity may have continued for at least 18 months, while scrutiny is also focusing on the suspect’s finances. Authorities have identified deposits totaling about 60,000 euros in his bank account and are examining cryptocurrency transactions to trace their origin and possible links to the leak of classified material.
Financial records are being analyzed to determine whether intermediaries or additional recipients were involved, while officials are also looking into the possible role of a go-between who may have helped establish or maintain contact with the Beijing-based handler. Two retired officers with reported communication channels to China are likewise under investigation.
Authorities continue to review the suspect’s contacts, travel and digital footprint in an effort to establish the full scope of the operation.
