Powerful wildfires continue to burn across southern Europe, prompting the European Union to deploy four firefighting aircraft to reinforce emergency response operations.
According to an update from the relevant authorities, “Greek firefighters from the European Union are currently operating at the wildfire in Carlencas.” Officials added that “the Greek firefighters participating in the European mission are currently assisting efforts to extinguish the wildfire in Carlencas.”
Carlencas-et-Levas is a small village in southern France, located in the Hérault department of the Occitanie region. Situated northwest of Montpellier, the area is surrounded by extensive forests that face a high risk of wildfires every summer.
In recent days, a major forest fire broke out in the area, burning approximately 62 acres. The blaze has mobilized hundreds of firefighters, including Greek personnel deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, who are providing critical support to local firefighting operations.
European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrnčířová said, “When a Member State comes under pressure, Europe responds together,” referring to the large-scale wildfires simultaneously affecting several European Union countries.
She also added: “This summer, we have proactively prepared a record number of firefighters—777 in total—while our fleet of 22 aircraft and five helicopters stands ready to assist whenever needed.”
