Firefighters responded to 37 wildfires in mixed rural and forested areas across Greece over the past 24 hours, with the vast majority brought under control before they could spread, the fire brigade announced on Tuesday.
According to civil protection authorities, 34 of the blazes were extinguished during their initial stages, while firefighting crews continued operations at three active wildfires. Local fire brigade investigative units are examining the causes of the outbreaks.
Authorities again urged the public to exercise extreme caution and to follow official instructions immediately in the event of a wildfire.
The latest incidents come after several days of intense firefighting operations across the country, including major blazes in western Attica prefecture, Troizinia, along the coastal eastern Peloponnese, and the Oreokastro blaze that erupted in an industrial near Thessaloniki, where strong winds complicated suppression efforts and smoke prompted health warnings.
Greece remains on heightened wildfire alert, with very high to extreme fire danger forecast for parts of Crete and the north Aegean as hot, dry and windy conditions persist.
