Authorities are investigating a disturbing case rural south-central Viotia (Boeotia) prefecture, where police discovered the body of a 90-year-old woman buried inside an abandoned stable. The remains, wrapped in bedding and in an advanced state of decomposition, are believed to belong to the mother of a 62-year-old, who is a supervisor of a citizen’s service center (KEP) in the wider region.

According to police, the daughter admitted she concealed her mother’s death, which she claimed occurred in 2023 from natural causes. She reportedly hired a foreign farm worker to help bury the body, saying financial difficulties drove her to continue collecting her mother’s pension and disability allowance.

The case came to light after neighbors reported they had not seen the elderly woman for years. When questioned, the daughter allegedly misled both neighbors and police, at times presenting another elderly woman as her mother. Officers later determined that the woman introduced as her mother was unrelated, uncovering the deception with the help of a photograph.

Charges have been filed against the 62-year-old for fraud, false testimony, failure to report a death, and negligent homicide. She was brought before prosecutors and is expected to face trial.

Police are now examining several key questions: whether the elderly woman’s death resulted from neglect or criminal action, the role of the alleged accomplice — whose identity remains unclear — and the financial damage caused to the state. Authorities are also awaiting the results of an autopsy to establish the exact time and cause of death.

Local officials described the accused as a withdrawn figure who had little contact with the community. Residents told investigators they had not seen the victim alive for as long as five years, raising further doubts about the daughter’s version of events.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities emphasizing that criminal involvement has not been ruled out.
