A 25‑year‑old woman, identified as Eirini (Irini) Mourtzoukou, has been arrested in connection with a series of infant deaths in Amaliada, western Greece. Authorities have charged her with serial intentional homicide involving three infants- incluing two of her own- and the attempted murder of an adult female friend, allegedly by suffocation.
Police took Mourtzoukou into custody on Monday under a warrant issued by an Athens court. She was transported to the Athens Police Headquarters (GADA) and is expected to appear before a prosecutor within 24 hours.
The alleged timeline of tragic events began in 2021 with the death of a six‑month‑old infant belonging to a friend and roommate. In 2022, Mourtzoukou’s first child—just 19 days old—died of interstitial pneumonia. Her second child, two months old, died in 2023 at Athens’s Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital, officially due to epileptic seizures, though questions have been raised about possible third‑party presence in the hospital room.
The final case involved the 15‑month‑old baby of a friend, who died in August 2024 while under Mourtzoukou’s care ﹘ sparking a nationwide outcry and an immediate probe by the Patras Appeals Prosecutor’s Office .
Mourtzoukou has maintained her innocence, indicating she awaits toxicology and histology reports concerning her second child’s death, and has called for independent expert review of all medical findings. Her lawyer has also requested the involvement of a forensic pathologist and pediatric specialist.
Her arrest marks a significant moment in a case that has captured national headlines since August 2024. During the investigation she appeared multiple times on television appealing for clarification and stating, “I am not involved. I want my children’s souls to be vindicated.”
According to reports, she has also been accused of trying to suffocate an adult female friend.
