Hellenic Red Cross Issues 72-Hour Survival Guide

As Middle East tensions escalate, the Hellenic Red Cross outlines essential emergency supplies for the first three days of a crisis and highlights available shelter capacity across Greece

As the crisis in the Middle East intensifies, the Hellenic Red Cross has released practical guidance to help citizens prepare for potential emergencies during the first 72 hours of a crisis.

In an informational video, the organization lists 15 essential items that should be included in a basic emergency backpack, designed to ensure self-sufficiency during the critical initial period.

The recommended supplies include a battery-powered radio with spare batteries to receive official updates, necessary medications and a first aid kit, non-perishable food that requires no cooking, and at least six liters of bottled drinking water per person. Other essentials include a flashlight, warm clothing and a survival blanket, cash in case ATMs are unavailable, copies of important documents stored in waterproof packaging, hygiene products, a mobile phone charger, spare keys, and basic tools.

The Red Cross also advises including items such as glasses, children’s toys for comfort, and pet food where needed.

In addition to personal preparedness, authorities have provided updated information on civil protection infrastructure. According to official data submitted to parliament last November, Greece has 2,892 shelters with a total capacity of nearly two million people, which could increase by around 30% if necessary.

Responsibility for maintaining these shelters is shared between local authorities and private property owners, who must ensure that facilities can be made operational within 24 hours in case of emergency.

A map of the location of various shelters across Greece, is provided by a government website, in order to assist citizens.
