An operation took place on the popular holiday island of Rhodes on Thursday to remove a huge boulder that broke away from a hillside and fell onto the road connecting the Ladiko site with what is now known as Anthony Quinn Beach, damaging the roadway and blocking access to the beach.

Around 250 people, mostly tourists and employees of businesses operating on the beach, were in the area, while approximately 100 vehicles had been trapped because the rockfall has blocked the only access road.

A heavy-duty machine was brought to the scene to remove the boulder, but work wouldn’t begin until technical services assess the hillside and rule out the risk of further rockfalls.

The municipality’s civil protection mechanism has been fully mobilized, with priority given to securing the slope and restoring traffic as quickly as possible.

Authorities are seeking to complete the operation before nightfall so that those at the beach can leave safely. Although initial assessments indicate no immediate danger to the people in the area, the situation is being closely monitored.
