A 44-year-old man accused of causing the large wildfire in the Pastra area of the Greek island of Kefalonia has been remanded in custody following his testimony before judicial authorities.

According to reports, the suspect will be transferred to Agios Stefanos Prison in Patras after an investigating magistrate and prosecutor ordered his pretrial detention.

The fire, which broke out late Saturday night in the Pastra area, caused extensive damage, burning more than 6,000 stremmas (1,480 acres) of agricultural and forest land in the Municipal Unit of Eleios-Pronnoi.

According to the findings of an investigation conducted by investigative officers from the Argostoli Fire Service under the continuous supervision of the Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Directorate (D.A.E.E.), the suspect allegedly started the blaze shortly after 11 p.m. using an open flame.

Investigators also said the 44-year-old was not previously unknown to authorities. According to the investigation, he had been involved in arson-related cases in the past and had been convicted and served a prison sentence for similar offenses.
