Severe weather hit parts of northwestern Greece on Wednesday, damaging livestock facilities and roads, while a lightning strike killed 88 sheep on Mount Peristeri.
The storms affected the area around Prodromi in Souli, in the Epirus region, and nearby villages during the afternoon.
Tornado damages livestock facility
A tornado struck the area, causing significant damage to a livestock facility. Part of the installation was destroyed, with images from the scene showing the intensity of the storm.
Souli Mayor Thanasis Danis told Epiruspost that the phenomenon was particularly intense but highly localized, with the rest of the area not affected to the same extent.
Municipal crews moved quickly to address the damage, while interventions were also carried out on sections of the road network where problems were reported.
Lightning kills 88 sheep
A separate incident caused major losses for a livestock farmer from Ioannina after lightning struck an area on Mount Peristeri at an elevation of about 2,000 meters, where his animals were grazing.
The lightning strike killed 88 sheep.
The farmer was at the site when the incident occurred but was not injured.
The farmer has already notified the Hellenic Organization of Agricultural Insurance which is responsible for agricultural insurance, so that the damage can be officially recorded and compensation can be considered.
The loss of 88 animals represents a significant blow to the farm’s livestock.
Damage in other mountainous areas
Severe weather also caused problems in other mountainous parts of Epirus.
Municipal services remained on alert and continued operations to address and repair the damage caused by the storms.
