A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck near Mount Athos in northern Greece late on Tuesday night, according to the Seismological Station of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The tremor was shallow, with its epicentre located 12 kilometres northwest of Karyes, the central administrative hub of the Mount Athos monastic community in the Halkidiki region.

Authorities confirmed there were no reports of damage or injuries. However, due to the area’s active geological profile, local officials and seismologists are closely monitoring the situation.

Residents and visitors have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks.

Mount Athos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its centuries-old monasteries and restricted access, which is limited primarily to male pilgrims and clergy.
