World-renowned, American born, Australian actor and director Mel Gibson has been welcomed at one of the holiest sites in Orthodox Christianity—the revered Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, in Greece. Known for his deep interest in spirituality, the Hollywood star is said to be staying at the Serbian Orthodox monastery for several days, fully immersing himself in the monastic rhythm of life and taking part in daily liturgical services.
Visibly moved by the experience, Gibson reportedly told the monks, “I’ve never felt such a strong connection with God anywhere else as I do here,” underscoring the profound spiritual impact Mount Athos is having on him.
According to sources, Gibson is staying at the historic Hilandar Monastery, often referred to as the Serbian Monastery, one of the most significant spiritual centers in Orthodox Christianity. His decision to stay there was intentional, as the monastery is a pilgrimage destination for believers from around the world.
Monks received him with humility, and it’s said that Gibson has asked to keep a low profile during his visit, seeking solitude and reflection over publicity.
News of his presence on the Athonite peninsula has already garnered international attention, once again highlighting Mount Athos’s unique spiritual role as a global destination for pilgrimage and inner renewal.
This is not Gibson’s first encounter with the sacred enclave. Following the release of his controversial and widely discussed film The Passion of the Christ in 2004, the actor began exploring Orthodox Christianity more deeply, often turning to monastic communities for spiritual guidance.
