A large fire broke out on Saturday near the northeastern Greek city of Alexandroupoli, engulfing a recycling facility in the Amfitriti area in thick black smoke and prompting an emergency alert to local residents.

According to the Fire Service, the blaze is still ongoing. Twenty-six firefighters, supported by eight fire engines and one ground team, have been deployed to the scene. Volunteers, water trucks, and heavy machinery are also assisting in the firefighting effort. An aerial unit, including a firefighting helicopter, has been mobilized as well.
The fire has produced a dense cloud of toxic smoke, leading authorities to activate the 112 emergency warning system. Residents in the surrounding area were urged to stay indoors and seal windows and doors to minimize exposure to the hazardous fumes.
