Μake us preferred on Google A man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting three separate fires in Aigaleo, a western suburb of Athens, on Tuesday night, Aug. 25.
According to the Greek Fire Service, the suspect set fire to dry grass near the junction of Kifisou and Athinon avenues, using a lighter.
Investigators said the fires were deliberately started around 11:30 p.m. using an open flame. The suspect, a Pakistani national, is said to have started the fires repeatedly.
Arrest made under expedited procedure
The man was arrested under Greece’s in-flagrante delicto procedure by officers from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes.
He is expected to appear before the competent prosecutor.
Greek authorities have continued investigations into deliberate arson incidents as part of broader efforts to identify and arrest those suspected of intentionally starting fires.
Arson cases in 2026
From Jan. 1 through Aug. 26, authorities have imposed 741 administrative fines totaling €1,211,770.68.
During the same period, 314 people have been arrested under the in-flagrante delicto procedure. Of those arrests, 279, or 88.85%, involved negligence, while 35, or 11.15%, involved intentional acts.
