In the early hours of Monday, August 17, shortly after 4 a.m., residents in the Troezen, a town in the northeastern Peloponnese, rushed into the streets after two parked vehicles went up in flames.

Minutes earlier, a 40-year-old man had approached one of the vehicles and, according to footage obtained by MEGA, bent down and set it on fire.

The Moment the Fire Was Set

The footage captures what followed frame by frame. Within minutes, the flames spread to two parked vehicles, while local residents rushed to move other cars out of the way in an effort to prevent the fire from spreading.

One resident attempted to contain the flames using a garden hose. As he tried to extinguish the fire, an explosion occurred, causing further alarm in the neighborhood.

40-Year-Old Arrested

The 40-year-old was arrested by authorities and, according to reports, confessed to setting the fire.

He appeared in court in Piraeus on Tuesday, where he requested and was granted additional time before entering his plea.

According to the same reports, the preliminary investigation found that the suspect had previously come to the attention of authorities over similar incidents.

Nine Other Arson Cases Under Investigation

Authorities are not limiting their investigation to the latest incident. Investigators are also examining nine other unsolved arson cases for possible links to the 40-year-old.

According to reports, he had previously set fire to a motorcycle, allegedly following an argument with its owner.

Investigators are also looking into his possible connection to other incidents, as he is alleged to have set fire to dry vegetation and garbage bins.

According to reports, the man allegedly told authorities that he could not remember how many fires he had set.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to determine whether the 40-year-old is connected to the other arson cases under review.
