A foreign detainee was found dead in police custody in Athens after apparently hanging himself with a makeshift noose made from his jacket.
The incident occurred on Monday evening, September 29, at the detention area of Athens police headquarters. According to police, the man was discovered by the duty officer and a guard, who immediately attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Paramedics arriving shortly after also tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
The man had been arrested on September 23 by the Kypseli Crimes Unit on theft charges, and a detention order had been issued for his transfer to prison.
Greek police confirmed that the public prosecutor has been informed and a coroner was called to examine the case. In addition to judicial procedures, an internal disciplinary investigation has also been launched to determine whether protocols were properly followed.
Authorities have not released further details pending the ongoing investigation.
