According to initial reports, the woman told authorities that the 59-year-old had abused her daughter over the years, taking advantage of his close relationship with the family. According to the mother’s statement to police, the abuse reportedly began back in 2016, when the girl was just four years old.
According to the same reports, the 59-year-old periodically hosted the girl at his home in Chania, and due to his close ties with the family, he also reportedly stayed at their home in Rethymno at times.
As part of the preliminary investigation, the 14-year-old girl was also questioned, and investigators reportedly gathered evidence that was reviewed by the relevant authorities.
Acting on orders from judicial authorities in Rethymno, police in Chania arrested the 59-year-old on Friday, August 21.
During the investigation that followed, authorities reportedly found child sexual abuse material, including on the suspect’s mobile phone.
The 59-year-old appeared before judicial authorities in Rethymno and, after his testimony, was ordered held in pretrial detention and taken to a correctional facility.
