Vendors and producers across Greece’s local farmers’ markets have announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting January 7, 2026. The action, organized by multiple national and regional federations of market sellers, comes as a protest against rising operational costs and policies affecting small producers.

In a joint statement, the Confederation of Greek Farmers’ Markets emphasized that despite offering products at low prices, producers and self-employed farmers face increasing costs at every stage of distribution. The strike aims to pressure authorities to address these challenges and support the agricultural sector.

Key demands include:

  • Tackling inflation and high prices in local markets
  • Reducing production costs for farmers
  • Eliminating the imputed taxation system
  • Withdrawal of an additional 10% tax
  • Reforms to electronic shipment documentation
  • Amendments to legislation (Law 4849/2021) which the federations argue hinders market operations

The federations stressed that the strike sends a clear message: local markets are vital for households, farmers, and consumers, and they must remain accessible and fair. “We will not allow markets to become victims of policies that drive up costs, consolidate the market, and undermine the primary sector,” the statement said.
