Greece is expected to see generally clear weather over the coming days, although weather instability will bring local rain and thunderstorms, mainly across mainland areas during the warmer hours of the day.
Temperatures will remain at relatively high seasonal levels, with the mercury reaching locally up to 34°C, while stronger northern winds will continue to affect the Aegean Sea.
Afternoon showers and storms on the mainland
Wednesday will begin with mostly sunny weather across much of the country. However, unstable conditions will return during the midday and afternoon hours, especially in mainland regions.
Early in the morning, parts of Central Macedonia are expected to see increased cloud formation, bringing brief showers or rain. From midday onwards, clouds will develop over other mainland areas and parts of the Ionian region, leading to local showers and scattered thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas.
The weather phenomena are expected to remain local and gradually weaken from the evening, with conditions improving later in the day.
Winds strengthen in the Aegean
Winds in the Ionian Sea will blow from northwestern directions at 2 to 4 Beaufort, while northern winds in the Aegean will reach 3 to 5 Beaufort and locally up to 6 Beaufort.
Temperatures will slightly decrease, mainly in northern Greece, but will remain high for the season. Most areas will see temperatures between 30°C and 33°C, while some mainland locations may reach 34°C.
Weather forecast for Athens and Thessaloniki
Athens will experience mostly sunny weather, with temporary cloud increases expected during midday and afternoon hours in western and northern parts of the region. Local showers or brief rain are possible, mainly in mountainous areas.
Temperatures will range from 22°C to 33°C, with mostly northerly winds at 2 to 4 Beaufort and locally up to 5 Beaufort in eastern areas.
Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is expected to see periods of increased cloudiness, with local showers or brief rain. Scattered thunderstorms may develop in nearby mountainous areas during the afternoon.
Conditions will improve from the evening. Temperatures will range from 22°C to 29°C, with variable winds at 2 to 4 Beaufort.
Thursday: Unstable weather continues inland
On Thursday, mostly sunny conditions will continue in most areas, but temporary cloud increases are expected during midday and afternoon hours across mainland Greece and the Ionian region.
Local showers and brief rain are forecast, while isolated thunderstorms may occur mainly in mountainous areas. The phenomena will weaken and become limited during the evening.
Northern winds will continue, reaching up to 6 Beaufort in parts of the Aegean.
Temperatures will remain high, reaching 32°C to 34°C in mainland areas, around 31°C to 32°C in the Ionian islands and Dodecanese, and 29°C to 31°C in other island regions.
Friday: Rain in central and northern areas, stronger winds
On Friday, unsettled weather is expected in parts of Central Macedonia and eastern Thessaly, where local showers or rain may occur from the morning through the late afternoon.
Elsewhere, mostly sunny weather will prevail, although temporary cloud increases in mainland areas during midday and afternoon hours may bring local showers or brief rain. Isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out in mountainous areas of northwestern Greece.
Northern winds will strengthen, reaching 4 to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean and locally up to 7 Beaufort, bringing a cooler feeling especially in eastern and island areas.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly and will remain slightly above seasonal averages in several parts of the country.
