A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway in the sea area southeast of Kefalonia, after a speedboat capsized, throwing two passengers into the water.

A 45-year-old Romanian national remains missing, with substantial Coast Guard and Hellenic Air Force forces mobilized to locate him.

According to local news site kefaloniafocus.com, the incident occurred approximately 12 nautical miles southeast of Kefalonia. After the speedboat capsized, the 45-year-old and a second passenger, aged 26, fell into the sea.

The local emergency response plan was activated immediately, and an operation began to locate and rescue them.

The 26-year-old was spotted and picked up by another speedboat in the area. He was then taken to the port of Argostoli and subsequently transported by EKAB ambulance to the General Hospital of Kefalonia.

The search for the 45-year-old continues in the sea area where the incident occurred. There are four coast guard patrol boats operating, as well as one lifeguard boat, and a Hellenic Air Force Super Puma helicopter taking part in the search and rescue operations.
